How to Use Cloudflare to Manage Your Domain

  1. Create a Cloudflare Account
    • Visit Cloudflare's website and sign up for an account.

  1. Add Your Domain to Cloudflare
    • Log in to the Cloudflare dashboard.
    • Click Add Site and enter your domain name (e.g., yourdomain.com).

  1. Scan and Import Existing DNS Records
    • Cloudflare will automatically scan your current DNS records.
    • Review the records and ensure they match those on your current DNS provider.

  1. Update Your Nameservers
    • Cloudflare will provide two nameservers (e.g., ns1.cloudflare.com and ns2.cloudflare.com).
    • Log in to your domain registrar (e.g., GoDaddy, Namecheap).
    • Replace your existing nameservers with Cloudflare’s nameservers.
    • Save the changes.

  1. Configure DNS Records in Cloudflare
    • In the Cloudflare dashboard, go to the DNS section.
    • Add or update records, such as:
      • A Record: Points your domain to your server’s IP address.
      • CNAME Record: Used for subdomains or redirections.
      • MX Record: Configures email routing.
    • Enable the orange cloud icon (Proxy Status) to route traffic through Cloudflare.

  1. Set Up Additional Features (Optional)
    • SSL/TLS Settings:
      • Ensure HTTPS is enabled under the SSL/TLS section.
      • Choose the appropriate mode (e.g., Flexible, Full).
    • Caching:
      • Configure caching rules to improve performance.
    • Security Settings:
      • Use the Firewall tab to set up protection rules.

  1. Verify the Setup
    • Use tools like DNS Checker to confirm your nameservers are updated.
    • Visit your domain to ensure it’s working as expected.

Additional Notes

  • DNS changes may take up to 24-48 hours to propagate globally.
  • Cloudflare’s free plan is sufficient for most basic needs, but businesses with high traffic or advanced security requirements can explore paid plans.
